Walk through that door if you dare!
Walk through that door if you dare!

I’ve been off for a few months, but hardly on vacation!  I finally made the leap into what might be called the Indie writers “big time!” I walked through that magic door and created a limited liability publishing company for R.Z. Halleson and Associates to achieve better exposure and distribution for the books and other writings that I pour my heart and soul into.

The challenges have been enormous, but I’ll admit that I had some things going for me. Let’s look at some pros and cons.

The good things:

  • A solid background in marketing: An MBA from Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Business, and lots of hands-on experience.
  • Seeing challenges as problems to be solved.
  • Incredible persistence in learning what I needed to know to accomplish any given task.
  • Willingness to be my own harshest critic.
  • Accepting that I wasn’t the best in the field, probably never would be, but good enough to get the job done and not embarrass myself.

Things that work against me:

  • My age. I will be eighty years old in another year. (Gosh, that sounds old! Lots of people are even dead by then.)
  • Budget constraints. Living on a fixed income means that I do everything (I mean EVERYTHING) myself. There is no money to hire anyone to proofread, edit, create websites, keep track of income and expenses (such as they are), and so I use free stuff whenever I can.
  • Where I live. This is actually a mixed bag. I love living in this Continuing Care Retirement Community  because the people living here are friendly, and most have lived full, interesting, and productive lives. The downside is that every day I watch friends slide into dementia, or succumb to the physical ailments of old age. My very first novel was about the care of the elderly back in the eighties. Painful to write and painful to read.

I took the leap anyway. In spite of the downsides, my desire to get my observations and stories out to the public was greater than my fear of failure. Only time will tell if this was the right decision.
